They've paid homage to Madonna and Lady Gaga, now the cast of Glee are set to take on the hits of one Miss Britney Spears. After much speculation, series creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed there will indeed by an episode inspired by the singer in season two of Glee.

He tells US television show Entertainment Tonight: 'We are writing a Britney Spears episode.' He did not reveal any further details or whether Britney herself will appear on the show. But at least one cast member won't be too thrilled with the idea has received the green light.

Matthew Morrison, who plays Glee club teacher Will Shuester, was asked in  May about his thoughts about a Britney episode.  He responded: 'That's a rumour her manager started. I hope our show doesn't go along that route.'

On the other hand, Jenna Ushkowitz, who plays Tina on the show, said: 'I would so not be against a Britney episode. I'm such a huge fan. It would be so much fun.' The Madonna-themed episode of Glee was a huge hit when it aired in America on April 21, drawing 13.5 million viewers.

It will no doubt come as a huge boost to mother of two Britney, 28, who has struggled with her career and personal life in recent years. Glee was nominated yesterday for 19 Emmy awards. The ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on August 29.

Morisson was nominated for an Emmy in the Best Actor category in a Comedy and Lea Michele was nominated in the Best Actress category, for her role as highly-strung over-achiever Rachel Berry. Jane Lynch who plays Sue Sylvester, coach of the Cheerios chearleading team was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Chris Colfer was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for his portrayal of gay teenager Kurt Hummel. Glee follows the trials and tribulations of a high school show choir in Ohio. Each week the show features several song and dance routines, mixing up current hits with songs dating back to the 70s and 80s.
